Recommendations for a new kind of taxicab market in Vienna

Project Lead: Jan Kluge

Duration: October 2019 – January 2020
Funding: City of Vienna

Passenger transport regulations in Austria underwent serious reform in 2020. The traditional taxi market and the upcoming ridesharing services have been merged to a single industry by federal law, so that all players in the market have to play by the same rules, including tariff regulations. However, the federal states were given some freedom of action in order to equip their local markets with competitive elements. Hence, the city of Vienna had to adjust taxicab regulations as well. This project – conducted by the Institute for Advanced Studies in cooperation with the university of Vienna – has given economic recommendations for the newly formed passenger transportation market in the city.
