Publications: Austrian Foreign Trade in Focus

In times of geoeconomic shifts, Austria's foreign trade faces significant structural challenges. Two recent publications analyze these developments from complementary perspectives.

The IHS Trade Monitor

In the journal Wirtschaftspolitische Blätter (Issue 1/2026), IHS economists Sebastian Koch and Hannes Zenz introduce the institute's web-based analytical tool “IHS Trade Monitor”. The dashboard processes and visualizes monthly data on Austria’s foreign trade. By linking time, country, and product dimensions, it provides policymakers and businesses with timely, evidence-based signals to track trade dynamics.

FIW Annual Report 2026

A broader analysis of Austria’s foreign trade is provided by the new annual report from the FIW research platform, co-authored by IHS economists Martin Ertl, Adrian Wende and Klaus Weyerstraß. It examines monetary foreign policy (interest and exchange rates) as well as the root causes of global economic fragmentation and rising protectionism. The report outlines policy options, such as strengthening the EU single market and diversifying supply chains through free-trade agreements, to safeguard Austria's long-term economic resilience.
