International PhD Conference "Platform Societies"

The junior research group Digitalization and Social Transformation has published the program of the International PhD Conference Platform Societies: Rethinking Power and Participation.

The conference takes place on September 17-18, 2026 at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS). The program covers a wide range of timely topics, including the evolving role of AI, transformations in digital labour, platform governance and digital infrastructures, and the social implications of platformization.

Alongside the internationally renowned keynote speakers Dr. Fernando van der Vlist (University of Amsterdam), Dr. Anne Helmond (Utrecht University), and Prof. Dr. Taina Bucher (University of Oslo), the IHS will welcome 31 doctoral candidates from universities in ten countries – Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Serbia, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States –  to present and discuss their doctoral papers and connect with their peers.

The organization committee is looking forward to welcoming all participants to two days of inspiring research on how digital platforms are reshaping contemporary social, cultural, political, and economic life.
