This project examines how monetary policies concerned with "climate central banking," (UNCTAD 2023) incorporate intersectional considerations of vulnerabilities exacerbated or transformed by climate change. It explores how monetary policies influence power dynamics in a "hotter world" (NGFS 2021) and considers how intersectionality in staffing and organizational cultures of central banks may impact such policies. The project illustrates this with examples of climate change related to LGBTI inclusive central bank staffing, knowledge transfer from LGBTI communities to banking cultures, effects of bank policies on LGBTI constituents and the idea of “queering policy” to challenge the assumptions underlying policy-making and implementation processes (Galego 2024). The project is based on interviews with central bankers and economist informants in seven countries/economic regions and an analysis of central bank communications. It aims to reveal how bankers in different settings perceive their policymaking in relation to climate effectiveness and (in)equality.
