Declaring Language Models and Recommender Systems a Public Good:
A Way Forward for Humanity

The field of artificial intelligence has witnessed remarkable advancements, offering both opportunities and challenges to societies as the prospect of artificial general intelligence draws nearer. It is vital to recognize that the first large-scale interaction of humanity with AI, particularly through recommendation systems, has contributed to the polarization of communities worldwide. This situation prompts the need to explore methods of regulating the core technology that drives user experiences on the internet and in virtual reality environments.

Taking into account the limitations of our attention span and its subsequent effects on our wellbeing, one suggestion is to declare recommender systems as public goods and apply algorithmic regulation to ensure a balanced and personalized content delivery across various aspects such as subject matter, viewpoints, emotional intensity, and emotional valence. Adopting this strategy could aid in addressing the broader implications of artificial intelligence while steering future research in a direction that fosters a more unified and diverse digital ecosystem.
