Scientific Coordination of the Austrian Socio-Economic Panel (ASEP)
The Austrian Socio-Economic Panel (ASEP), a long-running household panel with an emphasis on the linkage between survey and register data, is currently being implemented. ASEP is funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) and carried out by Statistics Austria. However, the substantive content of ASEP – the survey questionnaire and the selection of register variables – are defined by the scientific community. To this end, a scientific coordination unit based at the IHS coordinates the contributions of the scientific community, represented by a scientific advisory board and seven thematic working groups. The project launch took place in 2021 and a first pilot survey is currently conducted. Presenting the project, we outline the potentials of a long-term panel study merging different data sources and discuss the challenges we have faced so far.
