Michael Jonas is a senior researcher in the research group "Techno-Science and Societal Transformation". Since November 2017 he is coordinator of the project "Repair & Do-It-Yourself Urbanism" ("R&DIY-U"). In this project (funded by the bmvit, "Stadt der Zukunft", 4th call) a transdisciplinary R&D consortium aims to analyze the transformative potential of Repair & Do-It-Yourself Urbanism with regard to a fundamental change of the existing non-sustainable handling of commodities in selected urban districts, their infrastructures and dominant business and private household practices. In his research, Michael seeks to combine a wide range of approaches from various disciplines like sociology, philosophy, economic sciences, political sciences and geography. He is and has been engaged in projects concerning the themes Technology Assessment, Urban Sociology, Sociology of Consumption ("Fair Trade"), Political Sociology, Transformation Research, Science and Innovation Sociology, Knowledge and Technology Transfer, Knowledge Work, "Combined Technologies" and Art in Public Space. Michael studied theology at the University of Mainz (Germany) and sociology and economic sciences at the University of Dortmund (Germany). After finishing his degree in 1994, he worked as sociologist at the University of Dortmund, where he completed his doctoral thesis in 2000. He subsequently joined the IHS in Vienna in 2003. He has carried out several research projects sponsored by German ministries, the DFG, the "Arbeiterkammer Wien" or the OeNB (Austrian Central Bank) Jubiläumsfonds. He has taught (and teaches) at the IHS and at several universities, including the University of Vienna and the University of Frankfurt/Oder. In June 2013, he completed his post-doctoral lecturing qualification (Habilitation in Sociology) at the Europe University Viadrina Frankfurt/Oder (Germany).
