Part-time work in Vienna

The incidence of part-time work in Austria is comparatively high – every third woman works part-time, compared to just one in four in the OECD on average. Part-time work can be a symptom of the changing structure of employment – rising female labour force participation for example means that the (average) labour-force attachment of female workers will almost automatically decline – but can also be driven by weak labour demand. Much of the total adjustment to demand shocks during the Great Recession seems to have been realised on the intensive, rather than the extensive margin (e.g. Hart, 2017). This study takes an in-depth look at the development of part-time work in Vienna, using the Austrian component of the EU-Labour Force Survey (EU-LFS).
