IHS mourns the death of Erhard Busek (1941–2022)

The Institute for Advanced Studies mourns the death of its long-time member of the Board of Trustees, Erhard Busek. Busek was elected to the IHS Board of Trustees on April 14, 1977, at the suggestion of then President Wolfgang Schmitz. The then 36-year-old ÖVP politician, anno 1977 City Councillor of Vienna and Member of the National Council, was to become one of the longest serving members of the Board of Trustees in the history of the Institute. In his 20 years of service to IHS, Busek played a key role in shaping the institute's development, most notably the addition of the institute's building in Stumpergasse in the early 1980s, the increasing internationalization in the area of scholars (with more students, especially from Eastern Europe), and the realignment of IHS in the 1990s, including staff expansion and increased contract research. For Busek, who also served as Federal Minister for Science and Research and as President of the European Forum Alpbach, the function at IHS was one of several commitments in the Austrian science and education sector.
