Over the past 50 years, hundreds of people have finished their studies at the Institute for Advanced Studies, after having gained scientific knowledge, intellectual experiences and inspiration. In 2003 a group of IHS alumni decided to start IAO, the international IHS alumni organization. IAO offers a platform to bring together IHS alumni across generations, across disciplines, and across national borders and to share experiences, ideas and memories.
What is IAO?
IAO is the official alumni organisation of the IHS. Set up as a non-profit organisation according to Austrian regulations, it is led by a board which is elected every 2 years.
The board 2016 - 2017 consists of:
Dr. Katharina Seifert-Prenn, Mag. Gertraud Fellner, Dr. Oliver Grabherr, Dr. Christian Helmenstein, DI Dr. Peter Mayer, Mag. Oliver Prenn
The Objectives of IAO are:
- Sharing of experiences and networking of IHS alumni among each other, and with the IHS.
- Specifically, IAO aims at strengthening the link between science and economy as well as science and society.
- Supporting research and lectures at the IHS and its partner institutions.
IAO is independent and managed by its members. The board is elected by IAO members, according to the statutory of the organisation. IAO is sustained by membership fees, by sponsoring and non-monetary support. The majority of the organisational activities depend on the commitment of its members who use their talents, resources and free time to make IAO a special experience for all IHS alumni.
The organisation’s language is English, as IHS alumni are coming from all over the world and spread all over the world. Occasionally, German is used for special events taking place in Vienna.

IAO members meet after work in a café or restaurant. One alum / alumna is invited to give a pilot statement, telling about his or her career or a key topic of interest. Members have the opportunity to hear about life, work and research of fellow alumni. The remainder of the evening is dedicated to networking and discussions inspired by the pilot statement.
At least once a year we organize a larger event, called Perspective, taking place at the primaries of the IHS itself. IAO members, alumni, researchers or other interesting people are invited to discuss a specific topic followed by networking and socializing over a glass of wine and some finger food. This event is open to all alumni.
Organisational meetings are held regularly to meet and talk about management and administration of IAO affairs and activities. As IAO is set up as a non-profit organisation a General Member Meeting will take place every 2 years to re-elect the board.
