The Institute for Advanced Studies is an independent, non-profit research Institute covering the areas of Economics, Political Science, and Sociology. Since its inception in 1963 the IHS has been, and continues to be, committed to the highest quality standards of research and postgraduate education.

ECONOMICS AND FINANCE

The Academic Research and Teaching Group offers MSc and PhD programs in economics and specializes in academic research. The Applied Research Group is mainly conducting contract research for public and private clients.

Economics seminars in Vienna

The Jubiläumsfonds research project "Microeconometric Evaluation of Multiple and Continuous Treatments" is generously sponsored by the OeNB. The project applies state of the art methods to economically relevant evaluation problems from labour economics. POLITICAL SCIENCE

The Department of Political Science is committed to advanced basic research on the logic of multi-level politics in Europe. It is a distinguished member of the international scholarly community and offers a three-year post-graduate program in political science.

The research project "Political Preferences and Political Behaviour in the European political space" is generously sponsored by the Austrian Science Funds FWF (2010-13). We explore the causal determinants of vote choice in EP elections in the EU-27. In methodological terms we specify formal rational choice models of vote choice and large-N statistical analyses.

SOCIOLOGY

The Department of Sociology offers a three-year postgraduate training in Sociology of Social Practices. Teaching is closely linked to the departmental basic research of contemporary societies and comparative empirical research in special societal fields.

The multi-volume research report Studierenden-Sozialerhebung 2011 is the largest survey among students in higher education in Austria. The survey provides a comprehensive analysis on their living and study conditions and is as such an important source of information for federal higher education policy.
