Distributional Effects of the Austrian Pension System

Principal Investigator: Wolfgang Nagl
Project Duration: June 1, 2015 - May 31, 2017

Project Information: In this project we analyse intergenerational as well as intragenerational redistribution effects of the Austrian pension system. As a starting point and in order to get an impression of the intrageneration redistribution in the Austrian pension system we calculate net Social Security Wealth distributions to detect relative betterment of different groups (gender, lifetime income, pathway into retirement). In a further step we disentangled the implicit from the explicit redistribution in the Austrian pension system via construction a counterfactual notional defined contribution system. To learn more about the redistribution between current retirees we investigate the intergenerational redistribution for individuals born between 1937 and 1954 and intragenerational redistribution across lifetime income, gender and pathways into retirement using the internal rate of return.

European Social Policy Network (ESPN)

Principal Investigator: Marcel Fink
Project Duration: September 2015 - August 2016
Project Output: The ESPN assists the European Commission by providing high quality and timely independent information, advice, analysis and expertise on social policy issues in the EU and neighbouring countries.
Funding: European Union

Project Information: The European Social Policy Network (ESPN) was established in 2014 to provide the Commission with independent information, analysis and expertise on social policies. The ESPN brings together into a single network the work previosly carried out by the European Network of Independent Experts on Social Inclusion and the network responsible for the Analytical Support on the Socio-Economic Impact of Social Protection Reforms (ASISP).
The national Country Teams of the ESPN produce and update a comprehensive overview of policies addressing key challenges in the areas of social protection (such as pensions, health care and long-term care) and social inclusion in the countries covered, including their strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, the Country Teams provide several more detailed thematic reports.
