Kick-off Workshop Repair and DIY

The Kick-Off Workshop of the Project 'Repair & Do-It-Yourself Urbanism' (R&DIY-U) took place at the IHS on November 9, 2017. The project, which is funded by the bmvit ('Stadt der Zukunft', 4th call) and which is coordinated by Michael Jonas, aims to analyze the transformative potential of Repair & Do-It-Yourself Urbanism with regard to a fundamental change of the existing non-sustainable handling of commodities in selected urban districts, their infrastructures and dominant business and private household practices. With a transdisciplinary R&D consortium that comprises a fundamental and applied research team (IHS), an intermediary organization ('die umweltberatung') as well as commercial and non-profit R&DIY-U practitioners (HausGeräteProfi, Sit-In, LORENZI, Recycling Kosmos, Wiener Hilfswerk), the proposed research project incorporates multiple perspectives and R&DIY-U practices.

Cooperation agreement IHS and National Analytical Center, Nazarbayev Univ, Kasakhstan

On November 3, 2017, IHS Director Martin Kocher and Yerbol Orynbayev, Chairman of the National Analytical Center (NAC) at Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan, signed a cooperation agreement. Until the end of 2018, IHS will support the NAC in building macroeconomic modeling expertise and in creating macroeconomic models.

Quo Vadis Academia? Higher Education Research Contributions to an Evidence-Based Development of Higher Education

The first Austrian Network for Higher Education Research Conference will take place on December 4 - 5, 2017 at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Vienna. The conference will address contemporary issues and future challenges of higher education development and research. Thus, it will provide an overview of the research activities in the field of higher education in Austria.

3rd ATHEA Conference

Health Service Research in Patients with Complex Needs

On November 24, 2017, IHS will host the third ATHEA conference on ‘Health services research in patients with complex needs’. The keynotes will be delivered by Dr. Ellen Nolte, MPH PhD, honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, and Dr. Chris Bojke, MSc, chair in health economics, University of Leeds.

Call for Papers: 1st Vienna Workshop on Economic Forecasting 2018

The 1st Vienna Workshop on Economic Forecasting 2018, hosted by the Institute for Advanced Studies and organized by Robert Kunst and Martin Wagner, will take place on Feb 15-16, 2018.
The conference welcomes contributions from different approaches to economic forecasting, including forecasts based on time series models (VAR, SVAR, Factor Models,…), DSGE models, large scale structural models. Another topic of interest is forecast evaluation. Authors working in applications or theory of economic forecasting are invited to submit an abstract.
Online submission of an abstract is possible through the conference management system Conftool from September 28, 2017 and must be received by November 30, 2017.

Annual Gathering of STS Austria & Lecture and Workshop on RRI and STS

The annual gathering of STS Austria includes a key note by Vincent Blok (Wageningen University) on 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: the Opportunities for Responsible Innovation in Industry'. Afterwards, prominent scholars, including Erich Griessler, will discuss 'RRI as an engaged practice'. December 14, 2017 at IHS, lecture from 2:30pm onwards.

Markus Pock on the Cost of Smoking

IHS Health Economics and Health Policy researcher Markus Pock was interviewed by the news magazine NEWS about a new study on the national cost of smoking in Germany conducted by the University of Hamburg. The IHS study on the national cost of smoking in Austria was published in 2008.

Thomas Czypionka at MTD Austria Forum

Thomas Czypionka will be the keynote speaker at the MTD Austria (Medical Technicians Austria) and he will chair a workshop. Forum ‘MTD 4.0 – Profiles of the Future' held on November 17, 2017 at Albert-Schweizer-Haus. In his keynote, he discusses the challenges health care is facing as well as implications for health professionals.

An Integrated Border Management System – An Answer to the Migration Crisis?

On November 06, 2017, the IHS hosted the second TARN lecture featuring Berndt Körner, Deputy Executive Director of Frontex. More than 30 guests listened to his interesting talk: 'Integrated Border Management – an answer to the migration crisis?'.
Berndt Körner shared his expertise and his very personal experiences about all aspects of border management. The talk was followed by lots of interesting questions and a lively discussion between the participants and Berndt Körner.

Re-Thinking the End-of-life Controversy

Anna Durnova was invited to be a mentor at the Methodology Workshop at the ISA Northeast annual conference on November 4, 2017. Her talk was about fieldwork strategies and emotions in interview situations and was mainly based on her book ‘Politics of intimacy: Re-Thinking the End-of-life Controversy’ which will be released at The University of Michigan Press in the Series ‘Configurations’ in 2018.

On the current state of development of consumer research in Austria

A recent survey commissioned by the Arbeiterkammer Wien (AK), conducted by Michael Jonas, Simeon Hassemer (both IHS), Sebastian Nessel and Sandra Pfister (both University of Graz), analyzed the state of development of the consumer research in Austria. On Tuesday, October 31, the results were presented by the authors.

Places to die between desire and reality

In an article published online on October 31 in the weekly journal ‘Die Furche’ Katharina Heimerl (University of Klagenfurt) and Alexander Lang (IHS) report on their research project and present interim results. They raise the question ‘What does ‘good dying’ mean to seriously ill people, elderly people or relatives of the deceased?’’.
